Sairam Dave is a folk artist, humourist, author and educator who has spent nearly four decades working to preserve and expand Gujarat’s Daayra tradition. Once known primarily as a rural folk art, Daayra combined storytelling and music to entertain people while passing on philosophy, literature and cultural values. As the format gradually lost its place among changing audiences, Sairam Dave saw an opportunity to widen its appeal without changing its identity.
He introduced humour into the traditional format and later pioneered theme-based Daayras that brought together storytelling, literature and music around subjects such as Dikri Devo Bhava, Gau Vandana, parenting, relationships, patriotism and spirituality. Instead of relying only on fictional stories, his performances drew from everyday life, making Daayra familiar to younger audiences while preserving its traditional character.
Beginning his journey as a child artist in 1988, Sairam Dave has presented more than 4,000 performances across India and twelve countries. Conceptual shows such as Khamma Gujarat, Viranjali and Namotsav have taken Gujarati language and culture to audiences around the world. Beyond the stage, he has written around twenty three books, founded an educational institution called Nachiketa Schooling System, trained educators and emerging artists under his NGO Shree Sailaxmi Foundation, and contributed to government campaigns and community initiatives through his performances and compositions.
Today, Sairam Dave is widely regarded as a custodian of the Daayra tradition. His work continues to connect performance, literature and education with the same purpose that has guided his career from the beginning: ensuring that Gujarati culture remains a lived tradition, not simply a remembered one.
The Journey
Life and Journey
Sairam Dave’s journey began at the age of 4, when he started accompanying his father, the renowned folk artist Late Shri Vishnuprasad Dave, to Daayra performances across Gujarat. Growing up in a family of folk artists, he learnt storytelling, music and harmonium from an early age and made his debut as a child artist in 1988.
While continuing his education, Sairam Dave performed on Akashvani, All India Radio and released audio recordings that introduced his work to audiences across Gujarat. As his performances reached a wider audience, he gradually moved from recordings to live stage performances, establishing himself as one of the prominent voices in Gujarati folk entertainment.
Alongside his artistic career, Sairam Dave chose teaching as his profession. He served as a teacher and later as the Principal of Shala No. 5, Gondal. During this period, he mentored students in cultural activities, helped them perform on All India Radio and continued performing in foreign countries.
His work on stage also continued to evolve. He introduced humour into the traditional Daayra format and later pioneered theme-based Daayras centred on subjects such as Dikri Devo Bhava, Gau Vandana, parenting, relationships, friendship, patriotism and spirituality. His work gradually expanded into conceptual and multimedia productions. Viranjali pays tribute to India’s freedom fighters, Khamma Gujarat celebrates Gujarat’s cultural heritage, and Namotsav showcases the life and leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Together, these productions reflect the breadth of themes that have become a hallmark of his work.
Nearly four decades after making his debut, Sairam has completed more than 4,000 performances across India and twelve countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Kenya and Oman. His performances have travelled from Gujarat to New York, Muscat, Nairobi, Kisumu and East Africa, taking Gujarati language, literature and culture to audiences across the world.

To preserve the ancestral artistic tradition of music and poetry as passed from his father, Mr. Vishnuprasad Dave (a well-known Bhajnik), Sairam decided to be an artist after completing a Diploma in Electric Engineering.
